Bug Repro Steps links, should a user with a Visual Studio Test Pro w/MSDN be able to see the screen grab links?

$

We have Defect fixers  who only have access to the bugs due to using Visual Studio Test
Pro w/MSDN licenses. Test cases are executed via MTM and users are attaching screen grabs to the test case steps. When a Bug is raised the steps to reproduce is pre populated into the repro steps field along with linked screen grabs from test execution.

When the defect fixer attempts to view the screen grab via the link we get the message TF400409: You do not have licensing rights to access this feature: Test case management.

I know testers should attach the image as a separate attachment in the Bug attachment area which the Visual Studio Test Pro w/MSDN license allows you to view. I am just surprised  that the  link in the repro steps bug field is not support for user who has access to the bug without a test management supporting license.

the URL's have the TestManagement in them but  the users are launching them from the bug

I take it we can not make any changes  that  will allow the linked screen grab in the repro steps of the bug  to be visible to a user with a Test Pro License ?

Thought that I read somewhere that using either Team Explorer or Team Rooms with TFS 2013, that you can share your screen with somebody to get help with code, live.

Or is that an extension?

If it is possible, can somebody please point me towards a link. I have been searching all morning and have yet to find it again.

Thanks

MDX doubt for TFS Reporting

$

We have created a new work item type called 'Release'

Release -> Features -> PBI/Bugs -> Tasks/Test Case

I have requirement to create many reports that has to filtered across the Release work item been created. We usually slice it by Area/Iteration but here the requirement is different.

For ex:

Releases Overview report:

Release name| Owner as AssignedTo| Status Indicator | Completed Work | Remaining Work | Open Impediments

I can fetch all the release work items (Work Items with System_workItemType =Release) w.r.to team project for this report. But for other calculations :

Compute Open Impediments

  1. Find all the child items belong to the parent 'Release work item'
  2. Pick Open Impediments (Work_Item_Count with System_workItemType=Impediment and State = Open) in that list.

Is this possible by querying olap ?  Or we need to go for stored procedures for querying warehouse?

please give a fair idea to start with and good resources for learning MDX.

Thanks

Installing TFS PowerShell Cmdlets

I cannot get the TFS PowerShell Cmdlets installed. During the install, I am not prompted to install them. And, in fact, the Typical Install text states it will not install them. After installing, then going in to modify, I do not see PowerShell Cmdlets in the list of features.

I am on TFS 2013 Update 4 and PowerShell 4.0. How do I install these Cmdlets on the TFS server?

TFS TF Command bat script login

I have a question about TFS TF Command in bat script:

We create Daily Build Script in server that need to get source and make a label, it is always prompt me to enter username and password. But, you know, if I write my password in a script that is a security policy violation.

Windows:

Tf command like this.

tf get itemspec [/version:versionspec] [/all] [/overwrite] [/force] [/preview]

       [/recursive] [/remap] [/noprompt] [/login:username,[password]]

Unix:

Now we use this way to get source, it not security.

alias tfcmd='/tmp/software/TEE-CLC-12.0.1/tf -login:APAC\\UserName,password-server:https://tfspro.contoso.com/tfs/tfs03'

tfcmd get -Version:T -recursive -force -overwrite /tmp/workspace/

Could you please teach us about other solutions?

TFS 2013 Update 2 - Slow TFS Email Alerts

$

In the past couple of days/weeks people have start noticing the alerts are comming in delayed. Often up to 30 minutes, sometimes hours. we have not changed anything to our software. We do see an decrease in performance on the server, lets say a havier load.

We also noticed that once they arrive, they come in batches.

Do you have any idea what can cause this ? i have reason to believe its not an exchange issue, so im focusing on TFS.

i have read the tbl_JobHistory Table based on data in one of the emails.

i have an email that i received on 2/20/2015 15:58
Its a checkin alert, inside the alert it says: Checked in on: 20/02/2015 15:33:20

Also, i have received a total of 2 emails on 15:58, 2 on 15:57 and 1 on 15:46, which i now concider as "one batch", we see "batches" that spread over a few minutes.

The 6 emails received are:

Completed Build at 14:48 - received at 15:46
Completed Build at 14:58 - received at 15:47
Completed Build at 15:13 - received at 15:47
Completed Build at 15:24 - received at 15:58
Changeset Alert at 15:33- received at 15:58

I tried to match this against the job history table and wasnt able to find much jobs arround the actualy completed time.
I did see a spike in email alerts arround the delivery times.

startTime
endTime
ResultMessage 2/20/15 15:57 2/20/15 15:57 Notification Job Summary: 3/3 emails delivered. 6/6 soap notifications delivered. 0 errors.0 warnings. 2/20/15 15:57 2/20/15 15:58 Processing changesets in range 77317 - 77318 2/20/15 15:57 2/20/15 15:57 Notification Job Summary:7/7 emails delivered.1/1 soap notifications delivered. 0 errors.0 warnings. 2/20/15 15:57 2/20/15 15:57 Notification Job Summary:0/0 emails delivered.0/0 soap notifications delivered. 0 errors.0 warnings. 2/20/15 15:58 2/20/15 15:58 Notification Job Summary:4/4 emails delivered.16/16 soap notifications delivered. 0 errors.0 warnings. 2/20/15 15:58 2/20/15 15:58 Notification Job Summary:57/57 emails delivered.68/68 soap notifications delivered. 0 errors.0 warnings. 2/20/15 15:58 2/20/15 15:58 Aggregated 1 slices. 2/20/15 15:58 2/20/15 15:58 Processed 0 changesets

Does this make any sense to anyone ? where should i start troubleshooting.
To me it seems that TFS is holding the email events till some point where it releases them all.

Before above, the last emails were sent at 15:47, a batch of 69 emails.

Hope someone knows where to start

Thanks, Nico

Failed to resolve profiler path from COR_PROFILER_PATH and COR_PROFILER environment variables ... when unit testing with Fakes on TFS 2012

$

Trying to run unit tests on a build server using TFS 2012 but getting the error below:

Microsoft.QualityTools.Testing.Fakes.UnitTestIsolation.UnitTestIsolationException: Failed to resolve profiler path from COR_PROFILER_PATH and COR_PROFILER environment variables.

The unit tests fail on this line of code: using (ShimsContext.Create())

Visual Studio 2012 CU3 (with Fakes assemblies) and VisualStudio 2013 are loaded on the build server. Some of the unit tests are also failing when run in Visual Studio, but not all. All of them fail on the build server when run under the build process.

The build definition specifies to use MSTEST.exe for testing.

Any clues on what to check to fix this?

Wanted to add the call stack which shows calls to intellitrace, which is not being used, nor is it specified in the build definition:

Microsoft.QualityTools.Testing.Fakes.UnitTestIsolation.IntelliTraceInstrumentationProvider.ResolveProfilerPath()
Microsoft.QualityTools.Testing.Fakes.UnitTestIsolation.IntelliTraceInstrumentationProvider.Initialize()
Microsoft.QualityTools.Testing.Fakes.UnitTestIsolation.UnitTestIsolationRuntime.InitializeUnitTestIsolationInstrumentationProvider()
Microsoft.QualityTools.Testing.Fakes.Shims.ShimRuntime.CreateContext()
Microsoft.QualityTools.Testing.Fakes.ShimsContext.Create()

Developer & Designer Teamwork - How to configure source control & dev environment

$
0

  • Hi all,

We are a small digital agency and are developing web sites and applications using Asp.net Webforms. Our team is composed of developers and designers.

  • Our developers are using VS to build and debug apps
  • Our designers are responsible for theming, styling and some scripting. They currently use editors like Dreamweaver, sometimes VS Express.
  • Files usually resides on a shared folder on a dev server with IIS, so designer can immediately view their changes.
  • From here, we deploy everything to remote prod servers by FTP.

We are now planning to setup a new work environment using TFS that will allow for a better source control and history in both code files and design-related files. Team features are less important for us now.

We are struggling with the best way to setup our environment on our new servers to keep thins easy to use for everyone.

Here's the tooling we have:

  • VS 2013 licenses for our developers, 1 Msdn subscription
  • VS 2013 Community licenses for our designers
  • TFS Express
  • Windows Servers 2012 R2 with Hyper-V

Our requirements:

  • Have simple-to-use source control and versioning of projects.
  • Our developers must be able to develop, compile and debug projects easily with either built-in server OR local IIS (sometimes required)
  • In some cases, developers work on remote IIS on a DEV server, in case there a is lot of static content involved.
  • Our designers must be able to run projects easily to able to apply styling. They must be able to preview their changes immediately.
  • Designers only work on forms and theme-related files. There are very frequent but minor changes, often required by the developer, meaning the developers will need changes of designer immediately when they are finished to continue their work.
  • Only developers are responsible for deployment to prod servers.

Other info:

  • We all work in the same location
  • We have no particular preference regarding the use of either TFSC or GIT
  • Although this is sometimes a very handy solution, developing directly from a network share gets very slow. We currently work that way, but it's not a long-term solution.

Questions are:

  • What would be lean and simple-to-use setup here?
  • How could we keep a simple workflow allowing frequent simultaneous changes by both developers and designers, without forcing them to checkout-checking many times to synch their files?
  • Depending on the setup, would your recommend websites or web-applications?

Thank you for your recommendations.

Raphael

How to change Build Retention Policies on a Collection level

Hello,

Is there any way where i can change the retention policies globally (or based on collection) rather than modifying the build definition on each and every project.

Build Outcome:

Stopped – Keep Latest only (what do delete – Delete everything)

Failed Build – Last 2 only  ( what do delete – Delete everything)

Partially succeeded – Last 2 only ( what do delete – Delete everything except Label)

Succeeded – Last  5 only ( what do delete-- Delete everything except Label)

Private:

Last one only  - ( what do delete – Delete everything)

Thanks in Advance.

Stakeholder license

$

Hi,

We are trying to setup Stakeholder licenses for some users. We add a Stakeholder group to the global TFS groups. Then add windows groups to that group. Then add the TFS Stakeholder group to the 'Stakeholder' access levels group.

As soon as anyone has a stakeholder licenses, it says they have inherited Deny permissions on everything, we don't use Deny anywhere. They then cant use the feedback tool.

We need Stakeholder to be able to give feedback, it should work as I've set it up right?

I've seen other similar posts about 'limited' group but we've only enabled it in Update 4, not earlier, those are irrelevant.

cheers,

Jon

How to calculate Earned Value based on TFS data

We have created a new work item called 'Release'. So my report is to do a portfolio report for all releases. How to do Earned value calculation based on Release item.

Basic hierarchy is Release -> Features -> PBIs/Bugs -> Tasks.

Can anybody give a fair idea what things I have to consider in calculating Earned Value?

Thanks in advance,
