Find the TFS version

On one computer of our domain is VS 2012 and on another is VS 2010. Each of them connects to TFS. How do I discover the version of TFS?  Clicking the Help item at the top provides the version for VS.  I have found books for TFS 2005 and for TFS 2102.  I want to use the right book.  I read that there are planned frequent updates and that may make a difference.

On computer S (direct login to the server) is VS 2012.  There I have permissions to check out file Telemetry_VBA_Modules.xlsb

On computer W (workstation), after logging out of S and logging into W with the same user ID and password, I can find that file, but do not have permission to check it out.  What must be done to correct this?  Will it make any difference to update VS on the workstation to VS 2012?

I suspect I started things on the wrong path.  Is there a way to make TFS forget about all the directories and files it knows about and start over from scratch.  This time, using the book/manual. <grin>   And do you have a recommended book?
